Accomplished calligrapher and graduated of the National Film, Photography and Sound Engineering School (ENS) of Louis-Lumière in Paris, Wen Fang has paced the old districts of Beijing, looking for weathered walls. Her pictures of these walls, close to paintings, are witnesses of Beijing’s continual historical transition.
As well as this, her ironical photographs of real estate advertising are layed on shelves of a supermarket. Lying on the floor, portraitures of migrant workers, printed on bricks, stare at us and interrogate us about the future of the modern China they are literally building... Wen Fang’s exhibition pays homage to workers, anonymous actors constructing history, who exist in a China juxtaposed, searching to reconcile the culture and tradition of the past millenia with its dazzling modernisation. Men come and go, walls stay...….. but for how long?
