Rafael Navarro’s work started in the late 60s as a way of escaping reality, as a therapy to release the pressure form his responsibilities; photography was his last resort. But it is not until the 70s when his first series were first published. They were unusually modern for the time, and the way he interpreted the human body gave them a new meaning. Ever since, his work has always expanded to new directions, but, in some way or another, the nude, the skin of a woman’s body, were the center of the creation. Now, more than 30 years later, his work is still modern, not only in the way he approaches photography, but also in the meanings given to each and every image produced.
Along his extensive career, we can pin point several stages:
PRE-DIPTYCHS (1975-1985): Since the beginning of his career, he has extensively worked on the human figure. Showing and hiding, light and shadows, reality and imagination. His work reveals a very near sensibility. His images often extoll women. He uses this language to show his feelings, those he can’t express with words. However, there is always a revelation in his photographs. He gets to show things that were hidden to us otherwise. His first works will open the door to themes and references that will come back after the diptychs'period.
