Fake Studio

Fake was founded in London in 2000 by artist Fang Er. Meng Jin joined in 2004 sharing a love for contemporary art and design, subsequently moving to Beijing in 2006. Much like the name, Fake plays at the grey area between art and design, engaging with art activities also it involves in design projects.
Fill Up Space is the showcase of those two’s work that explores the relationship between urban transition and individual memory. Meng Jin is a local artist who was born in 70’s from last century. The way he approaches ideology is rather surrealistic or abstract, which builds up a meaningless social magnificence. His early work “A Room with A View” collected many public political buildings in Beijing, while his recent photo series “Every Room is Illuminated” creates pale and blur interiors with the mean of institutional power. Those work plays with the institutional contexts and political propagandas but they are all inside a room of his private imagination.
Fang Er was born in Taipei and grew up in different countries from Australia to America. After she met Meng Jin in England, they then moved to Beijing together in 2006. The experiences of living in Beijing to her has been overturned her believe and understanding of urban city. She found out that “speed” of the Beijing wasn’t really exciting. It was the “confusion” of this city keeps everything alive. She has been fascinated by the internal structure and systematic order, which lead her to discover the hidden atheistic between 2D and 3D, as well as the sensibility of symmetry. Fang Er employs found objects she collected from everyday life to create the atmospheres of social class. Her work is often simple but impressive.
Both are artists, the working mates, as well as lovers. Because of their lovely baby is coming up soon, they need to be off work for a while. The period that leaves the space for their Beijing life, but here at Fake Space they took their art works to fill up the physical space.
FakeSpace is the Beijing studio space of Fang Er and Meng Jin. It locates in the complex of Today Art Museum in downtown. It is also a show room for many of their friends who share the love of art and design. They come to here for making pieces, giving talks and making friends. Since it physically existed in 2006, it has held many cutting age exhibitions range from post-graffiti to cross over design events, including “Start Making Sense” street art group exhibition, Pure Evil Beijing show, “Beautiful Resistance – respects to basic shapes” etc.
