Daytime Never Understands the Darkness of Night

Night sails in, bringing with it mysterious light and shade. You will be embraced by a totally different world at the moment you step into it. My works is a personal expression toward the night, a feeling of meditation in the pitch darkness, the resonance with the darkness of a city night explorer, and an emotional release from peeping. Photography is a way for me to communicate this very feeling.
Through the dim light cast on ghost-like pedestrians, I intend to create an atmosphere that seems strange, seductive, alienated, frightening, uncertain, and tentative. The perplexing relationships of human beings are exposed as I press the camera button.
Anxiety innterweaves with composure; lamplight flirts with the darkness. Breathing the night air, I wander around searching for those things that only belong to the night. Anytime I encounter the sparkles of inspiration, I feel the impulse of unveiling the curtain of the night. I could feel the excitement and satisfaction at the moment I narrow my eyes to look into the viewfinder like a hunter zeroes in on his game.
The high level of sensitivity of digital camera allows me to photograph in the night. Usually, I would either snap or stage the photographs. I control the camera like using a brush pen. The inevitable grains caused by inadequate lighting during shooting are particularly highlighted for they give an effect of oil paintings. Depth of field, shutter speed, coloration, and composition interplay with the light, shade, and people, making viewers paradoxically feel familiar yet alienated. My works re-present an unrealistic dimension beyond the common visual experience, providing with the state of the night, the feeling toward the night, and relationships in the night.
Inspired by the works of the Italian metaphysical school establisher Giorgio de Chirico, whose dreamy, hushed images in the paintings set up a mysteriously lonely space, I start to conceive the idea of exploring the night. Unlike his motionless paintings, I employ photography techniques including slow speed exposure to present figures in action in an attempt to imitate oil paintings. I try to shuttle between the conceptual photography and traditional photography looking for a way to relief myself from social and personal pressures.
In the darkness of night people return to what they actually are. “The night is liberation. It provides a reason to take off the mask and to show the desire….”The night sails in, bringing with it mysterious light and shade. Night presents you what you will never see in the daytime—the seductiveness, desire, blindness, or weirdness…
