Jolans Fung – Desire / Disappearance
Art Beatus Exhibition Space
35-39 Graham Street, Ground Floor, Central, Hong Kong ( Near Hollywood Road and Lyndhurst Terrace )
Exhibition Duration: January 2 to 25, 2008
Artist will attend the opening ceremony from 6:00 to 8:00pm on January 2, 2008 (Wednesday)
Can you place the desires of consumerism, that encourage the fast disposal of the goods and services of our everyday life, side by side with the battle cries of collective memories, that strive to preserve some commonly known objects which have been with us for a while? Jolans Fung attempts to play out these notions with his conceptual photography.
To exemplify that Hong Kong is a place filled with contrasts, confusions and contradictions, Fung explores these bemused feelings in his Desire/Disappearance exhibition at Art Beatus Gallery starting January 2 to 25, 2008.
Hong Kong based Fung, finished his training at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris, France, in 1990. He received the Bundanon Artist in Residence Programme, Australia in 2000 and the Vermont Studio Centre Fellowship in 2004. He has been working as a full time artist since his return to Hong Kong.
In the Disappearance series at his up-coming exhibition, Fung focused on some of the structures that were hot in the news such as the Star Ferry Clock Tower, the Queen’s Pier, the Oil Street Government Warehouse that was once an artists' commune and the aged resettlement estates, that was once Hong Kong's housing solution for tens of thousands of residents. The Desire series, of course, captured items that were more pleasurable with images from three of the world's largest shopping malls: Central, Mongkok and Causeway Bay of Hong Kong.
Art Beatus Gallery's exhibition space is located at 35-39 Graham Street, Ground Floor, Central, Hong Kong (near Hollywood Road and Lyndhurst Terrace).
