FUSION
This exhibition came about as a result of the artistic friendship of Poul Nielsen and Yunlin Wang, a friendship created through the vagaries of fate, Which brought together an artist form a ranching community in Alberta,Canada and an artist from the other side of the world,Nanjing,China,to teach together at Medicine Hat College in southern Alberta.Yunlin and Poul have exhibited together on several occasions, both in Canada and in China;it was through the latter exhibitions that they encountered well-known Chinese artists Jian Cui,Ming Zhu and Xiaoheng Li.The sharing of interests, techniques and aesthetic approaches between the five artists will no doubt strike the viewer of this exhibition as strongly as it did the artists themselves.
At the basis of the connection between the five Fusion artists is the kinetic energy of a freely made gestural mark ,and the interaction of that mark with the physical nature of the ground, whether it be canvas or rice paper. For Jian Cui,Ming Zhu,Xiaoheng Li and Yunlin Wang, this mark-making practice originates in the intersection of the ancient and sophisticated brush painting and calligraphy tradition of China with those of western painting. For Poul Nielsen the gestural mark is based more comprehensively in a personal exploration of western expressive abstraction. The works in the exhibition can thus be seen as describing three-point triangle between pictorial representation, abstraction and symbol. The gestural mark of these artists convey with strength and directness an internalized sensation of physical being and physical experience, towards all three ends.
In the end, this very sense of an inner world expressed through the kinetic immediacy of the gestural mark is vividly apparent in the work of all five of the artists in Fusion, whether their aesthetic approach encompasses abstraction, representation or the symbolic. The gesture conveys the actual sensation and spiritual energy of our physical world;of being and experience.Fusion thus is an exhibition very much for and of our time,a time of unprecedented cultural interconnections between China an d Canada,a mingling which, like the works in this exhibition, recognizes shared ideas and sensations about our being in the world ,derived form and celebrating our richly unique heritages.
