The Born and Expansion of 2012
Chen Qi / Woodblock Print / 380cmX4200cm
“The Born and Expansion 2012” is a large-scale installation, with huge landscape prints displayed on thin walls, presenting a combined dynamic and static visual experience. The water-ripple patterns are made by the artist using the woodblock watermark technique, which is a great invention of ancient Chinese printmakers. The concept of“generation” is embodied in the process of using an ancient technique to create a contemporary artwork.“The Born and Expansion 2012” epitomizes the unity of construction and deconstruction, worldliness and heavenliness, existence and non-existence, being and not-being. The layers of overlapping landscapes seem to be dynamic and static at the same time. The visual experience is subtle, cyclical, tranquil and peaceful. As the ancient Chinese saying goes,“the wise man delights in water, while the Good man delights in mountains.” The black and white patterns in this artwork not only appeal to the visual sense, but also explore further into ancient Chinese wisdom.
