Du Xinjian and Burigude Zhang Painting Exhibition Press Release
Living and working in Canada since the late 1990s, philosopher-artist Du Xinjian and abstract artist Burigude Zhang both posit themselves within an artistic dialogue between East and West. For all their stylistic differences - Xinjian in his technical virtuosity and Zhang in his monochromic abstractions - these artists are surprisingly similar in their use of Western painting styles and representation of Chinese cultures and spirituality.
Du Xinjian is renowned for his skillful rendering of human anatomy and landscape, all the while referring to surrealist European masters such as René Margritte. Yet his continual use of the fish motif within his visual worlds draws a comparison between living beings in a way that is reminiscent of Buddhist philosophies. Burigude Zhang, in a similar vein, evokes the “kings” of Western abstract art -such as Malevich and Rothko- yet expresses the profundities of Taoist, Zen and Buddhist beliefs. In this original exhibition, we are thus reminded that cultural exchange does not constitute a play in which the East and West play designated roles, but an organic and ongoing interaction from which plural artistic identities can emerge.
