Zebras, strawberries, moths, livers, frogs, the buddha of mercy Guanyin, and all manner of strange and familiar elements are always appearing in Mao Mao's works, constructing a splendid world of fantasy. When we examine the stories in her paintings, we learn that fairy tales aren't as innocent as we expected, and not everything growing under the sun is a pleasant garden. A daydreaming girl is speaking plainly and has inadvertently aroused a chill. Her works are inspired by ordinary life encounters, perhaps a book she read, something she heard, a song––like the story Josephine Baker's clandestine under cover persona.
This exhibition in Star Gallery covers her work over the previous three years––each canvas a unique, fading fast memory.
