The Everyday Angel of Art
Sally has arrived, bringing with her the warmth of an angel, in her vibrant colors that are tinged with Latin-American flavors.
To be honest, I am rather afraid of paintings that are gloomy and cold, that are insipid and superficial, distressing and ambivalentand paintings that are about chagrin and grievance, anxieties and angst. These paintings, which do not containa speck of joy, always fill me up with sorrowfor the painter. My instincts and emotions tell me whichpaintings are beautiful and whichpaintings are discordant, as well as which painters try too hard and so on. Clever artists often paint in a manner that people admire and respect. However, whenthe composition is too calculated and deliberate, or too overtly polished, calm, detached or emotionless;then that is not idealeither.
That is why, when I look at Sally’s work, I am overwhelmed by happiness. Her paintings are delightful. They beam into our hearts like the gentle rays of the sun, and, like the sun, they bring soothing and therapeutic warmth. Sally’s paintings possess a sense of freedom, guilelessness, and uninhibitedness that are reminiscent of art brut, with colors and lines that are both musical and rhythmic. She desiresto evoke the mood and spirit of life, itself, through her paintings. Her art isnot without firm background concepts, but it is never pedantic. She is interested in the harmonious coexistence of everything under the sun, revealinga “vividness” that does not discriminate. Through her works, she expresses the finer details of the world and life, as well as the beauty of emotions, the beauty of atmospheres, colors, sounds, the human body and the beauty of expression.
Sally is very fortunate;she is an angel with a guardian angel of her own: her mother, who supports her wholeheartedly. She has great teachers and fellow classmates at the China Central Academy of Fine Arts. She has art promoters and curators who appreciate her work – they understand that angels do not need to conform to the conventional rules of painting, in order to be able to infusethe splendid glow of life intoevery matter. Her colors, lines, brush strokes, forms, composition and rhythm are so confident and straightforward. Her works do not harbor any prejudice towards any subject matter;her perspective on life is always passionate and sincere, which allows her audience a glimpse of the artist’s heart and soul and which evokes a child-like sense of enthusiasm and zest in us. It seems that each painting is a gift to life itself and each painting feels as exuberant and festive asa fiesta!
Such amazing perception of the world and such a confident manner of expression could only belong to a pure and sincere angel.
