For China, a rising big power in the world, 2008 is an extraordinary year. Having suffered from the world-shocking earthquake in Wenchuan of Sichuan Province at the wake of the snow disaster in southern China, instead of being overtaken, people across China are integrated under the banner of patriotism more than ever. As the old Chinese proverb goes, hardship makes a nation stronger. The culture of China and the remarkable power from the noumenal culture of Chinese civilization shock the world once more – and all the more.
Art, as a format of the superstructure of civilization, also symbolizes the form of the civilization. As the only traditional culture that has not been divided, Chinese civilization is endowed with strong vitality and has its own rules of operation: Chinese culture is like water to some extent. Water is both the softest and the toughest material on earth. Like that of water, Chinese culture has significant absorbing capability, is capable of improving and rejuvenating itself by absorbing foreign civilized achievements. In the same way, the germination and growth of modern art of China is greatly influenced by the internationalization of western civilization. China’s understanding and assessment standards of modern art have followed that of western systems, thus China’s modern art still has a long way to go in terms of perfecting the assessment mechanism of its own. The unbelievably high prices of some artworks have made people confused: what value assessment system has been taken as a reference in setting the prices? However, I believe that, with the steady development of China’s economy, and the increasingly stronger national self-confidence, in the foreseeable future, China is sure to establish its own modern art system comparable to that of western civilization. Another reason is that in China there are many influential artists, who are growing mature in the understanding of art and artistic accomplishments. I see the bright future of China’s modern art in them.
Genssun, with love of art and respect for traditions, sincerely hopes to grow together with ambitious artists and make our contributions for the renaissance of Chinese culture.
