RED GATE CLOSES 798 LOCATION
Beijing, January 17, 2009 — Red Gate Gallery shut the doors on its secondary location in the 798 art district on December 30. The gallery will now operate exclusively out of the Dongbianmen Watchtower.
The decision to close the Dashanzi space was precipitated by the rent increase on the galleries in the district, and other area galleries have left or are considering leaving. According to Director Brian Wallace, “The rent on the space essentially doubled, and we felt that this was not sustainable given the change in market conditions.”
As of the first of the year, Red Gate operations have been centered at the historic Dongbianmen Watchtower, where the gallery started in 1991. 798 | Red Gate Gallery opened in 2005.
“Although we continue to do brisk business and interest remains high, there is a noticeable shift in consumer habits because of the current economic situation,” says Director Tally Beck. “Concentrating our efforts in one large gallery space makes more sense right now.”
Red Gate has developed a strong program for 2009, including the introduction of new artists, flagship artists’ retrospectives, the fourth edition of The Bi-annual Experimental Ink Series and innovative group shows. The gallery also continues its world-renowned residency program.
